A MDF is a Main Distribution Frame room which is the heart of a company’s communication network. This room contains all of the vertical backbone and horizontal cabling of the entire company.  The IDF , Intermediate Distribution Frame is a smaller room usually located in between floors which feeds the network devices on a horizontal path. A network MDF/IDF is usually designed by a network engineering who has completed advanced training and has obtained certifications from named organization such as BICSI.
